The CENTRE'

CENTRE' at CARE

The Centre’ at CARE provides indoor recreation areas and therapeutic services for nearby CARE residents and adults with autism and IDD who live in the greater community. The facility is a 5,800 SF building with a 2,000 SF garage. It will have an indoor track, playground, jungle gym, and gaming area, all receiving natural light from large expanses of glass and interior windows on either side of the large space.

The Centre at CARE’s form provides a variation in facade heights that capture daylighting, emphasize main programmatic elements, and ensure the large building matches the residential scale of the neighboring CARE homes. The left band of programing will include four multipurpose therapy rooms, a collaborative space for therapists, BCBA’s office, and a nurse’s office. Adjacent to the courtyard is a heated therapy pool, two relax and ready rooms, and restrooms. Beyond the indoor track, double doors connect to the bike storage so residents can bring their bikes outside. The garage is designed to accommodate four vans with accessible access for loading, and interior access through the bike storage for safety. Depending on the location of the building on the site, the program elements can be mirrored to ensure the pool entrance is connected to the courtyard shared with the Care homes.

The Centre also features large expanses of glazing for the indoor track, therapy pool, and jungle gym. The wood columns, exterior doors, and garage materials add warmth.

The indoor track receives natural light from three sides – clerestories above the garage, interior windows surrounding the indoor jungle gym, and a wall of windows facing the CARE homes courtyard. Pops of color bring character to the space, while the warm wood ceiling balances the industrial look of exposed steel trusses.

The block of therapy rooms includes a central observation area flooded with light, providing individual rooms access to indirect natural light. The viewing area is wide enough to accommodate seating, viewing and circulation. Rooms are spacious for a therapist and another adult to explore various activities.
